Lions coast past Pioneers 183-99

Senior Jesse Taylor posted a pair of first-place finishes.

Wayne, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team defeated William Paterson University 183-99 in Wayne, NJ on Saturday.
 
The victory by the Lions (7-1, 3-0) puts them in position to win their fourth consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference title. TCNJ will host Rowan University next Saturday to determine the conference. The Profs are also unbeaten in NJAC dual meets.
 
TCNJ won every event but one, sweeping each race they officially entered. Sophomore Philip Hawley (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) led the way with three first-place finishes in the meet. Hawley won the 100-yard backstroke (57.38), 100-butterfly (54.75), and contributed to the 200-medley relay win. He was joined by freshman Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's), sophomore Michael Oliva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), and sophomore Stephen Gibson (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine). They finished in 1:40.27.
 
Senior Jesse Taylor (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley) took top honors in the 50-freestyle event and 200-IM. He posted a winning time of 22.49 in the 50 and 2:02.98 in the IM. Taylor also anchored the 200-free relay victory that finished in 1:30.27. He teamed up with Brian Giacopelli (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), sophomore Patrick Durning (Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy), and sophomore William Kasper (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan).
 
Senior TJ Burns (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) won both diving events. He took first in the 1-meter event with a score of 327.45 and reeled in a second win in the 3-meter tallying 347.92.
 
In the 200-fly, senior Jeff Capone (Lakewood, NJ/Toms River South) touched the wall first with a time of 2:10.96. Junior Xavier Moran (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) posted a winning time of 10:51.43 in the 1000-free.
 
The Lions return home on Saturday, January 28 to battle Rowan at 1 p.m. in TCNJ Aquatic Center.
