GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ryan Higgins and
Ryan VanDeVeen put a bow on their tremendous careers with the TCNJ men's swimming team, each standing on the podium one last time as All-Americans in individual events.
Higgins broke his own program record in the 200 back with a time of 1:45.69 in prelims and shattered it in the A-final, placing fourth in 1:45.00 even in the last swim of his career.
Higgins ends his career as a 7-time All-American, and Saturday night marked his second such honor in the 200 back. He was also a three-time All-American in the 400 IM, including a runner-up finish at last year's NCAA Championships.
VanDeVeen, meanwhile, finished sixth in the 200 breast at 1:58.74 to secure his ninth career All-America accolade and third in the event.
Higgins leaves with program records in the 200 back, the 200 IM, and the 400 IM. VanDeVeen is the all-time record-holder in the 50, 100, and 200 breast as well as part of the 200 and 400 medley relay.
TCNJ finished in a tie for 17
th place in the team standings with 82 points. The Lions have finished inside the top-20 in each of the last four national championship meets, and all seven swimmers who made the trip to the Greensboro Aquatic Center returned with multiple All-America certificates.
In the morning session,
Gavin Formon placed 18
th in the 1650 free (15:55.35), where
Steven Bendoraitis was 21
st (16:08.93).
M.J. Hoban was 46
th in the 100 free (45.65).
Next year, the Lions will bring back 8-time All-American Formon in addition to 5-time All-American
Andrew Kidchob. Hoban (3), Bendoraitis (2), and
Joe McChesney (2) all earned their first All-America honors at this year's NCAA Championships.
