Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey athletic department is hosting the 26th Annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day this Saturday, January 28 in Packer Hall. All girls from the third through eighth grade are welcome to join the festivities.

The centerpiece for the celebration is the Lions' women's basketball team match-up against Montclair State University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference battle at 1 p.m. The women's swimming and diving team will also be competing for the NJAC title across the hall in TCNJ's Aquatic Center. The Lions are taking on Rowan University in a conference meet that begins at 1p.m.

Activities will begin with registration at 11:15 before meeting and talking with a group of TCNJ student-athletes. Guest speaker Mika Ryan will address the attendees at 11:30, and a T-shirt making contest will also highlight the pre-game events. All registrants will receive a shirt and lunch will be served.

Ryan owns an impressive background in athletics and is currently the President/CEO of the Mercer County Sports and Entertainment Commission. She was head coach of the women's basketball team at Trenton State College from 1984 – 1993. Ryan also served as an assistant coach for the University of Virginia and Rider University. She has been the head basketball coach at Princeton Day School since 2010.

The Lions, currently 13-7 this season, will square off against the Red Hawks (14-6) in Packer Hall. All registrants are invited to attend the game. Special prizes will be given out by TCNJ's Dance and Cheerleading teams during timeouts and intermission.

Following the game, all attendees will have an opportunity to meet the members of TCNJ's women's basketball team. An autograph session will commence at 3:30 p.m.

National Girls & Women In Sports Day (NGWSD) is a special day for girls and women to celebrate their participation in sports and athletics. TCNJ has been a hot-bed for women in sports as women's teams have combined to capture 33 national championships at the institution. The Lions athletic program recently added its 39th overall national title this past November when TCNJ's field hockey team won the 2011 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship.

For further information about the events or registration, contact TCNJ Senior Associate Director and Senior Women's Administrator Kirsten Clark at clarkk@tcnj.edu or by phone at (609) 771-2230. Those interested must register by Tuesday, January 24.
