Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team opened its 2012-13 season with in dominant fashion as they defeated New Jersey Athletic Conference opponent Montclair State University 174-96 in TCNJ's Aquatic Center on Friday night.
Junior
Stephen Tarnowski (Ramstein, Germany/Ramstein American) led the Lions with a pair of individual first-place finishes while also capturing a relay event. Tarnowski posted a winning time of 2:05.19 in the 200-yard butterfly. He also tapped the wall first in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:04.74.
Senior
Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle event as well as the 500-free. He topped the field in the 200 with a finish of 1:48.34. Caputo also took top honors in the 500 with a finish of 4:53.62.
Junior
William Kasper (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) was victorious in the 50-yard free with a sprint finish of 21.26. He also won the 100-yard butterfly completing that race in 53.10.
The Lions swept the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke. Junior
Patrick Durning (Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) won the race with a time of 56.12. Senior
Andrew Smith (Basking Ridge, NJ/Morristown Beard) and sophomore
Dennis Hall-App (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) placed second and third in the race with times of 56.60 and 56.71.
Freshman
James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) secured his first two collegiate wins in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 IM.. He posted a winning time of 59.23 in the breast, while senior
Matt Morgan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) took second in 1:04.87. Shangle also won the 200-IM in 2:02.38. Senior
Matthew Peveler (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) won the 1000-free in 10:26.43.
The Lions return to NJAC competition tomorrow as they visit Ramapo College for a dual meet scheduled for 2 p.m.
