Center Valley, PA…Haverford College scored the game's final eight points to spoil the season opener for The College of New Jersey women's basketball team on Friday by the score of 54-49 in the opening round of the DeSales Tip-Off Tournament.
The Fords (1-0) move on to face the host school in the title game, while TCNJ (0-1) faces Neumann University (0-1) in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
DeSales won the opening game of the tournament in exciting fashion as Sondrine Glovas scored with 10 seconds left in overtime to lift the Bulldogs to a 67-66 win over Neumann.
The Lions led 49-46 with 5:22 left in the game when junior
Kelly Roddy (Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) knocked down a 3-pointer off of an assist from
Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull).
The Fords then closed the game with an 8-0 run taking the lead for good with 2:36 left in the game on a pair of free throws from Dominique Meeks.
The opening half was close throughout with TCNJ taking the biggest lead of the half in the latter stages thanks to an 8-0 run. That run broke a 22-22 tie as senior
Candace Vigo (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Technology) scored from the floor before Roddy and freshman
Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) each sank 3-pointers.
Haverford countered with a shot from long range before the horn as TCNJ led 30-25 at the break.
Roddy and Vigo each finished with 10 points for the Lions, while Roddy also contributed defensively with five steals and Vigo chipped in with five rebounds. Junior
Liz West (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) added eight points and five rebounds, with Coughlin chipping in with eight points.
