Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team continued its quality play in New Jersey Athletic Conference competition as they rolled to a 70-41 victory over Rowan University on Wednesday night in Packer Hall.
The Lions (6-2, 4-1 NJAC) won their fifth consecutive decision and fourth straight NJAC contest as all 14 players who contacted the floor registered points in the home win. Junior
Liz West (Monmouth, NJ/Shore Regional) led TCNJ with 12 points on six-of-seven shooting. Senior
Candace Vigo (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Technology) grabbed a season-best 10 boards to go along with seven points, and junior
Kelly Roddy (Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) tallied seven points and a team-high five assists.
The Profs (3-6, 0-5 NJAC) played hard but struggled on offense, suffering their fifth straight conference loss. Junior
Alexis Govan (Bridgeton, NJ/Camden City Tech) led Rowan with 10 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard
Eyandra Molina (Pleasantville, NJ/Washington Irving) chipped in with nine points and three steals.
The score was tight early on as TCNJ held a 10-9 lead with 13:09 to play. An 8-0 run highlighted by
Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) and
Kelly Roddy three-pointers gave the Lions some separation. West played her best 20 minutes of basketball in the opening half, netting 10 points in 13 minutes of play. She hit all five shots that she attempted and her aggressive play carried the Lions to a 35-16 halftime advantage.
Rowan came out running a high-tempo offense, but committed 12 turnovers and shot just 17 percent from the floor. Molina and Govan paced the Profs with six points each.
TCNJ picked up where it left off in the opening minutes of the second period. They stretched the lead to 29 with 12:20 remaining and continued to play efficient basketball while utilizing its depth off the bench. Freshman guard
Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) hit several key shots and finished with seven points as did junior
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck).
Rookie
Cari Winiarski (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) dropped in her first two collegiate points with a bucket with 7:35 remaining in the second half. She celebrated with two more baskets to finish with six points. Freshman guard
Taryn Mikulicz (Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) also netted her first career points in the win.
The Lions will hit the road and visit Stevens Institute of Technology this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Profs travel to Widener University on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start.
