Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team rolled to its third consecutive win as they defeated Rutgers University-Camden 51-28 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night in Packer Hall.
The Lions (3-2, 1-1 NJAC) put forth an unyielding defensive effort, holding the Scarlet Raptors to just nine field goals in the game and forcing 30 turnovers. Eleven players impacted the scoring column for TCNJ, led by senior
Candace Vigo (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Technology) who finished with nine points. Sophomore
Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) added seven points and four assists, while junior
Liz West (Monmouth, NJ/Shore Regional) scored six points and collected six boards.
Rutgers-Camden (2-4, 1-3 NJAC) dropped its third straight contest. Senior
Brittany Turner (Belleville, NJ/Queen of Peace) led Rutgers-Camden with a game-high 10 points and also grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore guard
Lillian Chukwueze (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) had a well-rounded game grabbing nine rebounds, tallying five points, and dishing out three assists. She also had three steals, while
Courtney Luongo (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook Regional) chipped in six points in just seven minutes off the bench.
The Lions raced out to a 28-11 lead at the half. Neither team was sharp in the opening minutes as TCNJ held just a 5-4 lead five minutes into the game. They eventually hit their stride, however, outscoring the Raptors 21-2 over the next 12 minutes of play.
The Raptors struggled with their shooting touch, hitting just two of their first 20 shots. They also had difficulty maintaining possession under duress, turning the ball over 16 times in opening period. Lions' guard
Kylie O'Donnell (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) applied plenty of that pressure, collecting three steals in the half. O'Donnell finished with six points on the offensive end.
The second half was similar to the first. Both teams sputtered at the onset of the second half, but picked up as the period continued. The Scarlet Raptors did a good job under the glass, compiling 50 rebounds that included 17 offensive boards. But costly turnovers and a tough shooting night were too much to overcome.
TCNJ freshman
Michelle Johnston (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) scored her first collegiate points in the second half. She drove the lane and banked in a shot while being fouled and also collected a rebound on the defensive end. Junior
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) finished with six points and five rebounds, while freshman guard
Angelica Esposito (Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) added five points and a pair of steal.
The Lions return to conference action when they visit Ramapo College this Saturday at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors host Montclair State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
