Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team suffered a 48-37 defeat to Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, eliminating them from New Jersey Athletic Conference post-season play.
The Lions (17-9) fell victim to the top-rated defense in the NJAC as the Scarlet Raiders (18-7) held TCNJ to a season-low 37 points in the game. They advance to the second round, visiting top-seeded William Paterson University on Tuesday night.
Senior
Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led the Lions with 12 points, while sophomore
Liz West (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) matched a career-best with 12 rebounds and also added six points.
Senior guard
Lori Nieves (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) led all scorers with 14 points and also had seven rebounds. Sophomore
ShaQuanna Marshall (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) had a solid all-around game posting a game-high 12 boards, nine points, and four assists. Sophomore
Jasmine Daniels (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) had a game-high six steals and four assists
TCNJ was simply out of sync from the opening tip-off and was unable to establish the rhythm that led them to 17 wins during the season. After leading the conference in the regular season with 5.8 three-point field goals per game, they were held to just a pair by Imhof and a late three-pointer by sophomore
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck).
The Lions struggled with RN's aggressive style of play in the opening half, hitting just 5-of-25 field goal attempts and turning the ball over nine times in the first 10 minutes of play. The Scarlet Raiders applied constant pressure and anticipated well picking off seven steals. They also blocked five shots in the half.
TCNJ senior
Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) provided quality minutes off the bench in the game, playing with tenacity and grabbing eight rebounds. Rutgers-Newark, however, was relentless limiting the Lions to 20 percent shooting from the floor and holding a 48-38 advantage in rebounds.
It marked the second straight game the Scarlet Raiders held their opponent to 37 points. They defeated New Jersey City University 47-31 in their final regular season game.
Rutgers-Newark lost to William Paterson 75-71 in overtime on February 8 and 59-54 in early January.
