Orlando, FL...The College of New Jersey men's tennis team opened the spring portion of the schedule in impressive fashion notching a pair of convincing wins in Florida on Monday.
The Lions started with a 9-0 blanking of Ursinus College and then posted an 8-1 triumph over Wheaton (IL) College. After playing a fall schedule that consisted of invitationals and tournaments, these were the first dual meets of the season.
Junior
TJ Riley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Moorestown) moved into the first singles position and won both of his matches and also teamed up with newcomer
Marc Nichols (Lawrenceville, NJ/Princeton) to earn a pair of wins at first doubles. Nichols was also 2-0 in singles play.
Also in the win over Ursinus, freshman
Gabe Allen (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) picked up his first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at sixth singles. He also won his match against Wheaton.
Also winning both matches in singles play were
Steven Fernandez (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and
Dan Lee (Abington, PA/Abington).
The Lions return to the court on Saturday, March 17 when they host Swarthmore College.
