Mahwah, NJ...Senior
Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had a record-setting day for The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team as she set two records and moved into second place on the program's all-time scoring list as the Lions coasted to an 19-3 win at Ramapo College.
Second-ranked TCNJ is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, while this was the season opener for the Roadrunners.
Mitchell established a new school record for points in a game with 13 as she scored three times and dished out 10 assists, which set another new record. The 2011 Division III National Midfielder of the Year passed
Lauren Dougher for the most points in a game. Dougher accomplished that feat during the 2005 NCAA Tournament with 12 points eight goals and four assists. Mitchell's 10 assists broke her own record of eight that she set during the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
By finishing with 13 points, Mitchell also moved past Dougher into second place on the program's all-time scoring list as Mitchell now has 323 points on 165 goals and 158 assists. The only person ahead of Mitchell on that list is former teammate
Ali Jaeger with 364 points (261 goals and 103 assists).
Mitchell was involved in the scoring right from the start as she set up classmate
Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) for the game's initial goal 42 seconds into the contest and then netted her first goal 27 seconds later.
Junior
Trenna Hill (Syracuse, NY/Lafayette) scored to make it 3-0 with an unassisted goal before the Roadrunners scored.
The Lions came right back as they responded with the next four goals with Mitchell scoring two of them and assisting on the other two, which were scored by Notos.
Ramapo made it 7-2, but the Lions ripped off seven straight goals to take a commanding 14-2 lead. The teams then traded goals in the closing minutes of the half as TCNJ led 15-3 at the break.
Early in the second half, Mitchell set up freshman
Erin Waller (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) for her collegiate goal to set the assist record and then broke the record for points in a game setting up freshman
Lauren Karpovich (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) for her first career goal.
TCNJ added two more goals later in the half making the final 19-3.
Notos had a very efficient game for the Lions as the senior scored six goals on only seven shots and raised her team-leading total to 14 on the season.
Hill added three goals for TCNJ, while
Jillian Nealon (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and Waller each had a pair.
Sophomore
Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) had a dominant game in the midfield as she gathered a season-high 10 draw controls and had three ground balls.
In goal for the Lions, sophomore
Kelsey Zinck (Burke, VA / James W. Robinson) finished with four saves.
TCNJ rounds out its four-game road swing on Saturday as they head to Frostburg State University for a 2 p.m. start with the Bobcats.
