Hoboken, NJ... The College of New Jersey's
Sharon Pfluger added yet another accomplishment to her already decorated career as she became the first head coach at the NCAA Division III level to earn 400 wins as she guided the Lions to an 18-6 win at Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday.
Pfluger, who is in her 26
th season at her alma mater, upped her career record to 400-39-1 and she is the second coach in all divisions to reach 400 victories. The only other coach to hit that milestone is Cindy Timchal (409), who is the head coach at the United States Naval Academy.
This season the Lions are 13-3.
The loss puts 18
th-ranked Stevens at 9-6.
The sticks of junior
Alex Spark (Harvey Cedars, NJ/Southern Regional) and sophomore
Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) got the Lions off to a flying start with Spark scoring the initial two goals of the game and Pigott the next.
Already leading 4-0, Spark netted her third of the game with an assist from
Sara Keating (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), while
Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) then deposited a pass from
Kathleen Notos (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) into the Stevens net as TCNJ reeled off the first six goals of the game in the opening 9:56.
TCNJ would add to that advantage the rest of the half as they would lead 11-3 at the half.
The Lions quickly increased their lead to double figures early in the second half as Spark scored 25 seconds into the fresh half and
Trenna Hill (Syracuse, NY/Lafayette) scored just over a minute later on a feed from Keating bumping the difference to 13-3.
Sophomore
Jen Garavente (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and Hill extended that run to four straight goals to start the half, before the Ducks scored consecutive goals to get back to within 15-5.
A timeout by the Lions settled things down and they netted three goals right out of the stoppage of play. TCNJ ended up outscoring the Ducks 7-3 in the second half and getting Pfluger the milestone win.
Spark finished with seven goals and one assist, with those goals giving her a team-leading 62 for the season. Notos collected four goals and two assists, while Pigott had a very balanced game scoring three goals, gathering six ground balls, and winning six draw controls.
Between the pipes for the Lions,
Kelsey Zinck (Burke, VA/James W. Robinson) made six saves for her 13
th victory of the season.
The Lions cap the regular season on Thursday, April 26 heading to Manhattanville College to face the Valiants in a 7 p.m. start.
