Newark, NJ... It may have taken a couple of extra days, but The College of New Jersey softball team was able to finish out its two-game sweep of Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday as the Lions grounded the Scarlet Raiders 5-1 for their sixth straight win.

The teams were schedule to play a doubleheader on March 31 and that was pushed back until April 1 due to bad weather. After TCNJ won the first game 11-0, rain washed out the second game forcing the teams to take the field again on Wednesday.

The win kept the Lions undefeated in New Jersey Athletic Conference play at 4-0, while they are 15-7 overall. The loss knocked Rutgers-Newark to 0-4 in the conference and 9-12 overall.

TCNJ's winning streak will be put to the test on Friday as they host Montclair State University at Lions' Park for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. The Red Hawks are 22-1 on the season and 4-0 in the NJAC.

The Lions got on the board early pushing three runs across in the top of the first inning. Junior Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) continued her hot stretch at the plate driving in two runs with a double and then came around to score on a single by Nicole Brodbeck (Atco, NJ/Hammonton).  Sogluizzo is hitting .450 with eight runs batted in during the team's six-game win streak.

In the fifth, TCNJ tacked on two more runs as freshman Katherine Cipolla (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) singled in both runs as Sogluizzo and Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) each scored on the play.

Rutgers-Newark spoiled the shutout bid by Lion senior pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) by scoring in the last of the sixth. Fitzsimmons finished the game allowing just that one run on two hits with four strike outs. With those four strike outs, she surpassed 400 for her career as she now has 402 in 404.1 innings.

Junior Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and Sogluizzo each finished with two hits, while Sogluizzo also scored twice and drove in a pair.
