Union, NJ... Moravian College scored an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to break a tie as the Greyhounds remained alive in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament edging The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
The loss caps another successful season for the Lions as they finished out their season at the Union, NJ Regional hosted by Kean University with a 26-17 record.
Moravian (34-10) remains alive in the tournament and will play against a yet to be determined opponent.
The game entered the seventh with the teams deadlocked at 4-4 and each getting chances in their respective parts of the inning. In the top of the innings, TCNJ loaded the bases, but Moravian
pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was able to get out of the inning.
Carmon then used her bat in the latter half of the inning leading off with a double and then scoring on a Lion miscue with two outs.
TCNJ had battled throughout the game as the Greyhounds took an early 1-0 in the first, but the Lions countered with two runs in the second. Senior
Katelyn Congilose (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) started the scoring with a RBI single to score
Kelly Hommen (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), while
Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) put TCNJ on top by drawing a bases-loaded walk to force in a run.
In the top of the fourth, Lee made it a 3-1 Lion advantage with a run-scoring single with pinch-runner
Corinne Minicozzi (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) crossing the plate.
The Greyhounds reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring three times, but once again the resilient Lions answered. This time sophomore
Nicole Brodbeck (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) delivered a two-out single in the fifth that brought home
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), who led off the inning with a walk. That 4-4 score held until the last of the seventh inning.
TCNJ had a very balanced attack at the plate as Sogluizzo, Brodbeck, Congilose, and
Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) each finished with two hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) pitched well in relief as she allowed just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.
Senior
Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) started and did not factor in the decision. She finished with one strikeout putting her program record for career strikeouts at 469.
This marked the final game for four Lions as Fitzsimmons, Congilose, Lee, and
Michelle Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John) put the finishing touches on their outstanding careers. During their time in the program, they qualified for the NCAA Tournament twice and New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament in each of the last four seasons. In all, they recorded 111 victories during that time.
