Box Score

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey women's basketball team suffered a 59-45 setback to William Paterson University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in Packer Hall.

The loss sends the Lions (11-6, 6-3 NJAC) into a four-way tie for second place with the Pioneers (12-5, 6-3 NJAC) in the league standings. Ramapo defeated New Jersey City University and Rutgers-Newark upended Rutgers University-Camden to raise their conference records to 6-3.

TCNJ was led by junior Liz West (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) who finished with a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds. Junior Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) hustled her way to 11 points and four assists, while senior Candace Vigo (New Brunswick, NJ/New Brunswick Health Science Technology) had a busy night under the glass with seven rebounds.

Three players reached double figures for WPU led by junior guard Floriana Borova (Creskill, NJ/Creskill). The points and assist leader in the NJAC, Borovan netted a game-high 16 and three assists. Junior forward Dana Jeter (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) had a big impact on the win finishing just one rebound shy of a double-double. She scored 12 points, collected nine boards, a pair of steals, and three blocked shots. Senior guard Lindsay Callander (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) was a perfect four-for-four from the floor and knocked down all three free throws to finish with 11 points.

The opening half was disappointing for the Lions, particularly coming off their momentous road victory over Moravian College on Monday night. They struggled to find their footing early on and the Pioneers capitalized with aggressive play. WPU jumped out to a 17-2 just six minutes into the contest. Each time TCNJ attempted to claw its way back into the game, WPU responded with a counter-punch on offense.

Rebounding was a factor in the visitors' dominance in the first period. WPU collected 26 boards compared to TCNJ's 17, eight of which were on the offensive end. Those additional opportunities led to 13 second-chance points.

West came off the bench to provide some stability in the paint, netting five points and grabbing five boards. As the dust settled on the opening half, the Pioneers held a commanding 39-19 lead.

The Lions outscored the Pioneers in the second half 26-20, but the hole was too big to overcome with an talenteded opponent on the floor. It marked the second time the Pioneers came out ahead of TCNJ, earning a 63-51 victory in Wayne, NJ back in November.

Lions' junior Kelly Roddy (Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) drained a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points and two steals.

The Lions return to Packer Hall this Saturday when they host Kean University at 1 p.m. The Pioneers return home to take on Richard Stockton College at 3 p.m.
