Bishop captures 200th career coaching win

 Ewing, NJ … Head coach Brian Bishop captured his 200th career coaching victory as The College of New Jersey men's swimming team defeated William Paterson University 171-100 on Saturday afternoon in TCNJ's Aquatic Center.
 
Bishop, currently in his 24th season in charge of the Lion's program, recorded all 200 victories with TCNJ. The Lions' swimmers made sure of their head coach's milestone by placing first in all 12 individual events and both relay races.
 
Sophomore Mark Marsella (Elmwood Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) got things rolling for TCNJ as he topped the field with a winning time of 10:26.24 in the 1000-free. He also placed second in the 500-free with a finish of 5:04.23.

Sophomore Dennis Hall-App (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) won that event with a time of 4:58.20.
 
The Lions swept the top three spots in the 200-free. Joseph Dunn (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), freshmen James Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) and Frederick McDonald (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) finished one-two-three with Dunn clocking 1:45.16. Shangle touched the wall in 1:46.08 and McDonald in 1:50.32.
 
Junior Philip Hawley (Eastampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley), senior Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), and junior Brian Giacopelli (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) registered maximum points in the 100-backstroke. Hawley placed first in 54.66 followed by Paulan (55.14) and Giacopelli (56.99).
 
Sophomore William LaPorta (Metuchen, NJ/Metuchen) dominated the breaststroke events in the meet. He won the 100 breast in 1:07.39 and 200-breast in 2:00.84. Freshman Evan Cignarella (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) placed second in the 200-breast with a time of 2:23.97.
 
Junior James Milone (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon), sophomore Aleksander Burzynski (Colonia, NJ/St. Joseph's), junior Michael Oliva (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), sophomore Matthew Vanbiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), and Shangle also registered wins on the day.
 
Bishop has led the Lions to eight 10-win seasons, 15 MET championships, and four NJAC titles. TCNJ has secured its 23rd consecutive winning season this year and the program has competed in the NCAA championship tournament every season since 1992-93. They have three finished in the top 20 at nationals for 17 straight years, including three, top-10 finishes. The Lions placed sixth overall at the 2010 NCAA championships.

TCNJ will attempt to clinch its fifth consecutive NJAC title this Saturday when they visit Rowan University at 2 p.m. The Lions return to campus to match up against nationally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on in their home finale on Sunday, January 27.
