#11 Springfield rallies past #19 TCNJ, 24-17

Junior Zach Zotollo posted a 12-6 winn at 174 pounds for the Lions.
Ewing, NJ… Visiting Springfield College won the final two weight classes to rally from a three-point deficit ending The College of New Jersey wrestling team's winning streak. The Pride overcame a 17-14 margin to pull out a 24-17 victory on Sunday.
 
The 19th-ranked Lions entered the match winners of five straight, but saw that run halted as they dropped to 11-6 on the season. Springfield continued their recent roll pushing their winning streak to eight straight. The 11th-ranked Pride are 8-2.
 
After falling behind 8-0, the Lions got their initial win of the match at 141 pounds as sophomore PJ Schmidt (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored a 12-4 major decision cutting the deficit in half. Freshman Mike Shaughnessy (Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) pulled TCNJ within a point scoring a takedown as the horn sounded at the end of overtime to collect a 9-7 triumph at 149.
 
At 165, two nationally-ranked wrestlers squared off with fourth-ranked John Darling (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) taking the mat for the Lions and fifth-ranked Derrick Longo (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) from Springfield. Darling was efficient throughout coming away with an 8-1 victory bringing the hosts to within 14-10 of the Pride. That win was Darling's team-leading 26th of the year.
 
Junior Zach Zotollo (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) brought the Lions even closer at 174 recording a 12-6 decision to make it 14-13 with Springfield still clinging to the lead.
 
Third-ranked Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) then put the hosts in front for the first time with a 14-0 major decision at 184. That win kept Broderick a perfect 13-0 in dual meets this season and gave the Lions a 17-14 advantage.
 
Springfield then got that lead right back with a pin at 197 and then secured the win with another victory at heavyweight.
 
TCNJ is idle until Friday when they face another ranked opponent traveling to seventh-ranked Wilkes University on Friday, February 8. That match begins at 7 p.m.
