Ewing, NJ... The weather has already made several changes to The College of New Jersey softball schedule, but things are looking much brighter for Saturday, March 23 when the Lions will play their home opener on the newly dedicated Dr. June Walker Field.
TCNJ will host SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader with a pre-game ceremony slated for 12:45 p.m., where Lion head coach
Sally Miller and Red Dragon coach Julie Lenhart will each make brief remarks about Dr. Walker's legacy. Following those remarks, a ribbon cutting will be held to mark the opening of the field.
The Lions enter the game with a record of 9-3, while the Red Dragons are 5-7.
Last fall, TCNJ officially named the diamond at the softball complex Dr. June Walker Field in front of a large turnout on Homecoming Weekend in conjunction with the annual alumnae game.
The field naming was made possible thanks to a $100,000 endowment to ensure Walker's legacy will have its rightful place with Lions' softball. This goal was met thanks to the generous donations of alumni, family, and friends of the softball program
Walker was the head coach for 22 seasons, spanning from 1974 until 1995. During that time, she guided the Lions to an eye-popping 721-154 record, capturing five NCAA Division III Championships and added seven second-place finishes. In addition to coaching, Walker also served as Associate Director of Athletics at the College during her tenure.
