Ewing, NJ, NJ... In a showdown of nationally-ranked softball programs, visiting Rowan University took both ends of a doubleheader from The College of New Jersey on Tuesday to solidify their hold on second place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
The 11
th-ranked Profs are 11-1 in the conference and 30-4 overall, with that NJAC mark trailing only undefeated Montclair State University. The two losses kept the 24
th-ranked Lions in third place with an 8-4 league mark, while dropping to 21-9 overall.
TCNJ continues NJAC play on Saturday, April 20 for a pair of games at New Jersey City University, while the Profs return home on the same day for a doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark.
Game 1
Rowan University 4, TCNJ 0
Pitcher
LeAnne Miller (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) quieted the top hitting team in the conference limiting the Lions to only an infield single by
Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) in the second inning. Miller improved to 17-2 on the season and struck out six.
TCNJ entered the game hitting .330 as a team.
Rowan took the early lead in their initial at bat when
Jennifer Arcella (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) singled and later scored on a TCNJ error.
The visitors doubled that advantage in the fourth on a RBI double by
Alysa Romero (Newfield, NJ/Vineland) making it a 2-0 game.
In the sixth, the Profs added a third run with Romero driving in her second of the game with a base hit and close out the scoring in the seventh on a solo home run by
Jess Phillips (Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Regional).
Freshman
Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) gave up only a pair of unearned runs in 5.1 innings to see her record dip to 13-2.
Game 2
Rowan University 5, TCNJ 2
Just like the opening game, the Profs scored in the top of the first inning when
Ashley DeYoung (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) singled home
Shilah Snead (Malaga, NJ/Delsea Regional).
Rowan added four runs in the top of the fifth, with three of them coming on a home run to left center by
Stephanie Labas (Millville, NJ/Millville).
TCNJ plated both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth as junior
Kristen Lake (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and freshman
Kristen Fitzsimmons (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) each scored on an outfield error.
Lake finished the second game a perfect 3-for-3 for the Lions, while senior
Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) added two hits.
Labas was 2-for-4 for the Profs with three runs batted in on her home run.
The two wins gave Rowan head coach Kim Wilson 600 career wins, as she is bumper her overall record to 600-246.
