Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham) registered a hat trick in the opening half to lead The College of New Jersey men's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Farmingdale State College at the Kelly Sports Ltd. Rowan Invitational on Saturday night.
The Lions (3-1) notched their second straight victory and third in four contests. Freshman
Shawn Etheridge (Oakland, NJ/Ramapo) knocked in the first two goals of his collegiate career in a span of less than seven minutes to the put the match out of reach. The Rams dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Shaw, who entered the game tied for the New Jersey Athletic Conference lead in goals with four, tacked on three more in the win. He has scored in every game thus far and tallied the game-winner in each of TCNJ's three victories.
After missing a shot wide one minute earlier, Shaw struck net to put the Lions up 1-0 at the 15:06 mark. Just over six minutes later, freshman
Nick Costelloe (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp) delivered a pass to Shaw, who found the five-hole with his shot to push the lead to 2-0.
Costelloe is also off to strong start his rookie season with seven points (two goals, three assists) through four games. He finished with two assists on the night.
With under eight minutes to play in the first half, Shaw tallied his third score of the game off a feed from classmate
Sean Casey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South). It was the second assist in as many days for the Lions' hard-nosed defender.
As a team, the Lions have been finishing their chances through the first four games. They have found the back of the net 17 times and have put the ball on target 63 percent of the time on shots. (Out of 65 shots this season, 41 have been on net.)
Etheridge caught the spotlight in the second half. He drove a ball into the top right corner from 10 yards 23:44 after the break to notch his first goal in the Lions' uniform. With 14:58 remaining in the game, he took a feed from Costelloe and finished his second career goal to make it a 5-0 game.

Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley), sophomore
Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, NJ/Passiac Valley), and freshman Jacob Neteruk registered the combined shutout. The Lions' defensive unit has allowed just two goals through four games this season.
TCNJ now looks forward to its home opener, taking on third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday night at 7:30 in Lions' Stadium. The Ducks (3-0) have won all three of their contests this season. The game is scheduled to streamed live on the web.
