Owings Mills, MD… The College of New Jersey women's soccer team ran its season-opening winning streak to four straight as the Lions capped off another perfect weekend with a 3-1 triumph over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday.
The 13
th-ranked Lions (4-0) started the season by winning both games of their own tournament and this weekend traveled to Stevenson University in Owings Mills, MD and swept both games in the Stevenson Tournament. In the opening round on Saturday, TCNJ beat the host institution 1-0.
The game against St. Mary's got off to a fast start with senior
Katie Lindacher (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) scoring just 26 seconds into the game. The forward used her speed to get past a Seahawk defender on the far side and put home her second goal of the year with a low shot.
After St. Mary's (1-1-2) tied the game just over 10 minutes later, TCNJ regained that lead with a goal in the waning seconds of the period. Freshman
Lauren Malajian (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley) picked up her first collegiate goal scoring only 14 seconds left in the half, sending them into the break with a 2-1 advantage. Malajian's goal turned out to be the game winner, marking the fourth different player to net a deciding goal this fall.
The game remained a one-goal contest in the final minutes when senior
Sloan DePiero (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) one-timed a free kick by junior
Jordan Downs (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) for a 3-1 cushion. That goal came with 5:37 remaining.
Senior keeper
Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) improved her individual record for the year to 4-0, finishing with a pair of saves.
TCNJ seeks its fifth straight win on Saturday, September 14, heading to Farmingdale State College for a 2 p.m. start.
