Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey men's and women's basketball programs open the 2014 portion of their schedule this Saturday when they host Ramapo College in a New Jersey Athletic Conference basketball doubleheader in Packer Hall beginning at 1 p.m.
The Lion programs are a combined 8-0 in their last eight contests, with the women's team earning six of those victories. TCNJ sits atop the conference with a perfect 4-0 record and is currently 7-2 overall. They square off against the Roadrunners (4-5, 2-2 NJAC) at 1 p.m.
The Lions lead the league in scoring offense, averaging 76.8 points per game. That figure is truly the sum of its parts as four different players are scoring double-digit points per game.
Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) leads the pack with 12.7 points per game followed by senior
Kelly Roddy (Belmar, NJ/St. Rose) at 12.3 ppg. Guards
Kylie O'Donnell (Magnolia, NJ/Sterling) and senior
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) have also fueled the offense with 11.9 and 10.4 points per game to go along with a team-high 30 and 29 assists respectively.
TCNJ is also getting it done from the free throw line and behind the arc. They lead the NJAC in free throw percentage (.750) and three-point field goal percentage (.328). The Lions are draining an average of 8.8 three-point shots per contest.
The men's squad has captured its last two road games, defeating Rutgers University-Camden 69-56 and Westfield State University 71-66. The Lions hope to notch their first home-court victory this Saturday against Ramapo (5-6, 2-2 NJAC) at 3 p.m..
Sophomore
Bobby Brackett (Lawrence, NJ/Lawrence) has impacted the Lions' interior presence, averaging 16.6 points per game and 13.1 rebounds per contest. Bracket tops the nation with eight double-doubles and ranks seventh nationally (first in the NJAC) in rebounds per game.
Juniors
Alex Fox (Westwood, NJ/Washington) and
Jayson Johnson (Bordentown, NJ/Life Academy Center) have also averaged double-digits in scoring. Fox leads the team with 17 three-point field goals (40 percent) and junior
Jason Chalmers (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) is off to a solid start with 8.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
The Roadrunners have experienced a roller coaster season to date, losing its first three games, winning the next four, and then dropping three straight. They defeated Carroll University in their last contest 71-49 in a holiday tournament held in Las Vegas, NV.
