TCNJ cruises in conference opener

Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team cruised to a 19-2 win in its New Jersey Athletic Conference play opener as the Lions defeated visiting Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday.
 
The win bumped the seventh-ranked Lions to 3-0 overall, while the Scarlet Raptors fell to 1-3. It was the first conference game for both teams.
 
The Lions dominated right from the start scoring the game's first 12 goals. Junior Kendal Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) was responsible for a bulk of the damage as she scored four goals and assisted on another in the opening 30 minutes. Senior Jen Garavente (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp), senior Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington), and junior Erin Waller (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) each added two scores in the period.
 
Rutgers-Camden netted its lone goal of the first half on a shot by junior Dorothy Westlake (Lumberton, NJ/Holy Cross) with 2:41 left in the period.
 
TCNJ led 12-1 at the break.
 
In the second half, the Lions remained in command scoring seven of the eight goals. TCNJ had nice balance in that half getting goals from six different players, while sophomore Cecilia Gross (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scored for the Scarlet Raptors.
 
Borup led TCNJ with six goals and one assist, while Garavente had three goals and two assists. Waller factored in on six goals with two scores and four helpers. In all, 10 different Lions recorded goals.
 
Freshman Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) picked up her second straight win between the pipes.
 
In goal for Rutgers-Camden, sophomore Michelle Boyd (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) finished with five saves.
 
TCNJ returns to the road on Saturday, March 15 heading to Purchase, NY for a game with Manhattanville College. Game time is 1 p.m., while Rutgers-Camden is idle until March 19 when they host Arcadia University.
