Ewing, NJ…A clean sweep in doubles play and then a near-perfect performance in singles was the right formula for The College of New Jersey men's tennis team to net their first win of the season on Sunday. That win came via an 8-1 score over visiting Washington College.
The victory puts the Lions at 1-2, while the Shoremen dipped to 1-1.
TCNJ won all three doubles matches with the top duo
Howard Telson (Edison, NJ/J. P. Stevens) and
Pierce Cooper (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) collecting an 8-4 win. In the second spot,
Mike Stanley (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) and
Billy Buchbinder (Scotch Plains, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge) posted an 8-3 triumph, while
Gabe Allen (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Dan Presuto (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) teamed up for an 8-5 victory in the third position.
The Lions won the first five singles matches with Telson (1
st), Cooper (2
nd), and Stanley (5
th) each winning in straight sets. Presuto and Allen each went three sets, claiming the match in a super breaker. Presuto won 6-0, 5-7, 10-6 at third singles and Allen prevailed in the fourth position 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
TCNJ will head to Florida next weekend for three matches over spring break. The first of those dual meets is set for Sunday, March 9 against Cornell College from Iowa.
