Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team continued to excel on both ends of the field as the Lions cruised to an 18-0 win over Eastern University on Saturday in a steady downpour at Lions' Stadium.
Â
TCNJ has been very consistent on offense this season as they have scored in double figures in each of their eight games and have tallied at least 18 in six of those contests. Defensively, the Lions recorded their first shutout of the season and didn't allow the Eagles a shot.
Â
The victory keeps fifth-ranked TCNJ undefeated at 8-0, while Eastern fell to 3-5.
Â
The Lions dominated the first period scoring all 12 goals. TCNJ grabbed the lead for good just 38 seconds into the game when junior
Erin Waller (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) unassisted.
Â
That lead quickly moved to 3-0 as senior
Jen Garavente (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and junior
Ava Fitzgerald (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored 14 seconds apart, with the latter of those goals coming with 23:26 left on the clock.
Â
Later in the half, the Lions had another pair of quick-strike goals when the two players switched roles with Fitzgerald scoring and Garavente getting another 16 seconds later. Those two goals bumped TCNJ's lead to 6-0 less than half way through the half.
Â
The Lions would double that lead by the end of the period and forged a 12-0 advantage at the break.
Â
TCNJ tacked on six more goals in the second frame with junior
Kendal Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) scoring two of those to wrap up the team's eighth straight victory.
Â
Waller led all players with six points on three goals and three assists, while Garavente led all goal scorers with four. Borup chipped in with two goals and three assists and Fitzgerald scored three times.
Â
Junior
Lauren Karpovich (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had steady game in the win scoring her first goal of the season, adding an assist, collecting a game-high five ground ball, and caused two turnovers.
Â
Freshman
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) and classmate
Catherine Killian (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) each played a half in goal to combine on the shutout.
Â
TCNJ returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, April 1 when they head to Ramapo College to take on the Roadrunners at 4 p.m.
