Rochester edges TCNJ netters, 5-4

Sophomore Pierce won at sixth singles against Yellowjackets.
Ewing, NJ…The College of New Jersey men's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end as the Lions dropped a tight 5-4 decision to visiting University of Rochester on Sunday.

The loss dropped TCNJ to 5-3 on the season, while the Yellowjackets improved to 9-4.

The Lions picked up one win in doubles with the tandem of senior Howard Telson (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) and sophomore Pierce Cooper (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) earning a team point with an 8-3 win.

The teams then split the six points in doubles as Rochester picked up the win thanks to that extra point in doubles play. Cooper picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles for the hosts, with the other wins coming from freshman Mike Stanley (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) and sophomore Billy Buchbinder (Scotch Plains, NJ/Wardlaw-Hartridge). Stanley earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win in the fifth position and Buchbinder collected a 6-3, 6-4 triumph in the sixth slot.
