Randor, PA... A seven-goal burst to close out the first half gave The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team some breathing room as the Lions went on to 19-5 victory in their final road game of the season on Thursday.
The win put fourth-ranked TCNJ at 14-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers fell to 11-5.
The Lions never trailed scoring the game's first goal when junior
Erin Waller (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) buried an assist from senior
Lauren Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) 1:08 into the game. Cabrini then tied the score at 1-1, but TCNJ got back-to-back goals from juniors
Kendal Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and
Ava Fitzgerald (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) to regain its advantage.
Cabrini then fell behind by four goals at 6-2 and responded with consecutive goals to make it a two-goal game.
TCNJ then took control scoring the final seven goals of the half to turn that two-goal lead into a cozy 13-4 cushion at the half. Senior
Jen Garavente (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) scored three of those goals with each being of a different variety. The first came at even strength, the second while the Lions had a man-up situation, and the last one on a free-position shot. Junior
Erin Healy (Spring Lake Heights, NJ/Manasquan) chipped in with two goals during that run and Waller and Fitzgerald collected the others.
The Lions continued their run in the second half scoring the opening three goals of the frame with Pigott, Fitzgerald, and Borup scoring in succession. Those goals gave TCNJ a comfortable 16-4 lead.
The Cavaliers then notched their only tally of the second half with the Lions wrapping up the win with the final three goals of the period completing the 19-5 triumph.
Balance on the offensive end of the field once again paved the way for TCNJ as Fitzgerald led the charge with five goals and two assists and Garavente added four goals and two helpers. Pigott and Borup each chipped in with three goals and one assist.
Lion goalie
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) picked up four saves to record her 13
th victory of the season.
TCNJ concludes the regular season on Saturday, April 26 when they host Kean University at noon.
