Box Score Union, NJ … Kean University scored a pair of goals in each half as they defeated The College of New Jersey men's soccer team 4-0 at Kean Alumni Stadium in Union, NJ on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Lions (3-6-2, 0-3 NJAC) dropped their third straight New Jersey Athletic Conference contest as the offense continues its search to find the rhythm and production it showcased earlier this season. TCNJ matched the Cougars (6-3-1, 1-1 NJAC) in shots with 17, but they could not find the back of the net as Kean controlled the scoreboard to win its first conference game of the year.
Â
The Lions had their best scoring chance early in the game. Sophomore
Nick Costelloe (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) ripped a shot off the crossbar just 6:55 into the match. That seemed to wake up the host Cougars as they rattled off six shots in the next nine minutes.
Kean got on the board in the 32
nd minute when
Sevag Kherlopian took a long pass from
Robert Barrera and knocked a ball off the left post and in for a 1-0 advantage. Just over ten minutes later, the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick and
Kevin Olay converted for his third tally of the season.
Â
Following the intermission,
Michael Vargas punched in a loose ball to put Kean up 3-0 with a little less than 15 minutes remaining in the game. Just over one minute later,
Kenny Rocha collected a rebound off of an initial save by Lion goalkeeper
Maciej Libucha (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley) and quickly deposited his shot to put the game out of reach.
Â
Libucha finished with three saves, while Kean keeper
Brad Watkins stopped five shots to record the shutout.
Â
TCNJ returns home on Wednesday night to battle the College of Staten Island in a non-conference match-up at 7:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live from Lions Stadium.
