TCNJ cages Cougars with 3-0 win

Senior Gina Caprara scored for the second straight game for the Lions.
Box Score
Ewing, NJ... The College of New Jersey women's soccer team scored a bunch of timely goals late in each half to collect a 3-0 win over visiting Kean University on Saturday.

The win kept the 12th-ranked Lions perfect in New Jersey Athletic Conference play at 2-0 and at 7-1 overall, while the Cougars fell to 6-4 overall and 0-3 conference.

The game was scoreless through most of the first half with the Lions keeping the ball pinned into in the Kean half of the field. They broke through for a goal in the last minute when senior Gina Caprara (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) created shooting space and laced a shot into the near corner for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.

TCNJ tacked on some insurance late in the second half with two goals less than four minutes. The first came off of a nice passing play when freshman Jessica Goldman (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) crossed the ball into the Kean penalty area, where classmate Abigail Emmert (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks East) touched it to sophomore Christine Levering (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville). Levering then buried the attempt with 10:58 remaining as she moved back into a tie with Caprara for the team lead in goals.

Emmert and Levering teamed up again for the third goal with Levering sending a passing to a charging Emmert, who capped off the chance with her first collegiate goal.

Cougar keeper KC Nunez (Fair Lawn, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) had a big game with 12 saves, included two sprawling stops that kept Kean close.

TCNJ goalie Kendra Griffith (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) notched her third straight shutout as she finished with one save, denying Kean's Sam Marchetti (Wall Twp., NJ/Wall) on a free kick from 25 yards.

The Lions continue NJAC play on Wednesday, October 1 heading to Richard Stockton College at 7 p.m., while Kean is in action that same day with an afternoon game at New Jersey City University.

1994 National Championship team honored
At halftime, the Lions celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 1994 NCAA Division III National Championships team. The team captured the national title with an exciting 4-3 sudden-death overtime win at UC-San Diego completing the season with a 22-1 record. They also successfully defended its 1993 title as the program won two national titles in its first five years as a NCAA program.
