Game Recap: Field Hockey |

TCNJ edges Salisbury 3-2 in overtime

Ewing, NJ... For the second straight game, The College of New Jersey field hockey team has worked its magic in overtime as the Lions pulled out an exciting 3-2 double-overtime win over visiting Salisbury University on Saturday.

The win put top-ranked TCNJ at 6-0 on the season with each of the last two wins coming in extra time against ranked opponents. The loss was the first of the year for the third-ranked Sea Gulls as they dropped to 6-1.

Senior Alicia Wagner (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) netted the winning goal with 1:31 left in the second 15-minute overtime when she deflected a shot by junior Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Twp.). The play originated on a penalty corner.

Up to that point in the second overtime, each goalie stood tall with Salisbury's Tressie Windsor (Delmar, MD/Delmar) making four of her eight saves, while TCNJ's Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) stopped all three shots she faced. One of Schlupp's saves in that period was a sliding stop on Natalie Wilkinson (Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley). She finished the game with seven saves.

Both teams took advantage of a penalty corner to get on the scoreboard in the opening half. TCNJ struck first when Smith ripped a shot off of an insert from freshman Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Station). That goal came 6:18 into the game.

The Sea Gulls evened the score with 14:16 left in the half as junior Becca Rinaca (Pylesville, MD/Parkside) redirected a shot by junior Annah Brittingham (Pocomoke City, MD/Pocomoke).

In the second half, TCNJ's Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) swiped in a nice pass from Smith. That goal came 9:35 into the period.

Brittingham then knotted the game at 2-2 with 13:32 remaining in regulation to set up overtime.

TCNJ takes on another non-conference foe on Tuesday, September 29 when they play at Manhattanville College. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
