Ewing, N.J. … The College of New Jersey field hockey team hosted #15 Montclair State University in Lions stadium this afternoon and came away with a 4-0 victory. The Lions are now 8-3 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC.
TCNJ, ranked 12th nationally in Division III field hockey, kept up constant offensive pressure, outshooting the Red Hawks 9-2 in the first half, but they did not get on the board until the closing minutes of the half.
With just under four minutes remaining before half time,
Alexa Magnotta (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) crossed the ball to
Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) who was waiting at the top of the circle. Douglas took a hard shot and netted her 11th goal of the season.
Senior
Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Township) made the score 2-0, 14 minutes into the second half.
Taylor Barrett (Neshanic Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) pushed the ball in on a corner to Smith, who was waiting at the top left side of the circle and she rocketed the ball straight past the goalie.
Douglas deposited her second goal of the game to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Lions. Smith crossed the ball and Douglas was waiting on the left post to redirect it into the back of the cage.
The Lions continued to apply offensive pressure, which resulted in the fourth goal of the game from
Cayla Andrews (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown). She shot the ball and collected her own rebound before finding the back of the net.
Christina Fabiano (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) got the start in net and made one save to register the shutout.
The Lions are back in action on Thursday, October 13th when they welcome Ursinus College for a non- conference matchup. The game is slated for a 7:30 p.m. start.Â
