Collegeville, PA ... The College of New Jersey wrestling team put forth a strong effort at the Ursinus College Fall Brawl Tournament on Saturday.
Senior
Nick Herring (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) announced his presence for the 2016-17 season with authority, posting a 4-0 mark on the day and placing first in the 165-pound weight class. Freshman
Dan Kilroy (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) also had an impressive day on the mats, winning four of five bouts and placing second at 174 pounds. Rookie
Anthony Gagliano (Howell, NJ/Howell) took third overall at 141 and junior
Luke Balina (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) finished fourth in the 157-pound weight class.
After a first-round bye, Herring posted a major decision (14-5) over Brandan Rudy of Delaware Valley College. He then edged Dean Caravela of Naval Academy, 5-4. After advancing via medical forfeit, Herring matched up with Patrick Scarborough of Liberty University in the final. He battled to a 3-2 decision to capture the title.
Kilroy was a wrecking machine en route to the championship final. He won by major decision in the opening two matches by scores of 15-1 and 16-0. Kilroy won by fall at 4:19 of the bout over Ronald Wuest of McDaniel College. In the semifinal, he rolled to tech fall decision (19-0) over Edwin Morales of Camden County. In the final, Kilroy dropped a 6-3 decision to Joshua Ferenczy
of Liberty.
Gagliano received a bye and then registered back-to-back tech fall decisions, 16-0 and 16-1. He fell to Kyle Trybus in the semifinal match, but rebounded with a 13-2 major decision over Colin Devlin of Gettysburg in the consolation final.
At 157, Balina muscled his way to a 5-3 decision in the opening match and followed with an 8-0 major over Eddie Howlette of Ursinus College. Balina dropped a 6-0 decision to Colin Kowalski of Gettysburg. He bounced back with a 5-4 win over Sekou Harris of DelVal, but was edged, 3-2 by Bryson Woody of the Apprentice School in the consolation final.
Freshmen
Nic Mele (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) and
Mike Plaska (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) combined to post seven victories at 133 pounds, while sophomore
Ryan Erwin (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley) also a solid day, going 4-2 in the 141-pound weight class.
TCNJ will host its home opener this Wednesday night when they take on Kings College at 7:30 p.m. in Packer Hall. The Lions currently have 696 wins in program history and will look to reach 697 with a dual meet win.
