Final relay win lifts Lions past Violets,151-143

Meet Results

Ewing, NJ … In what has developed into a classic rivalry between two top-10 Division III programs, The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team defeated New York University, 151-143 on Saturday in the TCNJ Aquatic Center.
 
The meet came down to the final event and the 12th-ranked Lions (4-0) topped the 7th-ranked Violets in the 400-freestyle relay race by over three seconds to capture their fourth win. The team of senior Scott Vitabile (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown), sophomore Alex Skoog (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood, junior Ryan Gajdzisz (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood), and senior Andrew Nesbitt (Somerset, NJ/St. Joseph's) posted a winning time of 3:05.90 to garner 11 points and the home triumph.
 
The victory avenged a 151-147 loss at NYU last season.
 
TCNJ opened with 11 points to its credit when took first in the 200-medley relay. Junior Adam Coppola (Kearny, NJ/High Tech), Nesbitt, Skoog, and Gajdzisz finished in 1:34.38. Gajdzisz was key to the win, registering 20.65 in the final 50-free.
 
Freshman Harrison Yi (Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) and junior Logan Barnes (Columbus, NJ/Northern Burlington) placed one-two in the 1650-free. Yi led the field with a time of 9:56.98 and Barnes was runner-up in a tight race for second in 9:58.55.
 
Vitabile, Gajdzisz, and freshman David Madigan (Lawrenceville, NJ/Notre Dame) swept the 200-free. They touched the wall in order in 1:43.03, 1:43.42, and 1:46.18. Sophomore Sam Maquet (Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) was the top finisher in the 200-butterfly event with a time of 1:55.35. Coppola won the 50-sprint with a finish of 21.64.
 
Vitabile racked up two more blue ribbons in the 100-fly and 100-free, while Gajdzisz won the 500-free.
 
In the diving well, David Adlai-Gail (Princeton Jct. NJ/West Windsor-North) placed second in the 1-meter dive (6 dives) with 227.48 points. Freshman Matt Bendik (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Twp.) took second in the 3-meter (6 dives) with a score of 169.28.
 
TCNJ will have a week off from competition before hosting the TCNJ Invitational from Friday, December 2nd through Sunday, December 4th.
