York, PA... The College of New Jersey wrestling team competed at the New Standard Invitational Saturday, finishing in 12th place.
Anthony Gagliano (Howell, NJ / Howell) led the way for the Lions with a runner-up performance, going 4-1 at 141 pounds. Gagliano started the day earning a major decision in the round of 32, before earning his first fall of the day in the round of 16. In the quarterfinal round, trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Gagliano earned a two point takedown with just 21 seconds left to take a 4-3 advantage and rode out the remaining time for the decision victory. Facing fourth ranked Greg Warner from York College in the semi-finals Gagliano earned his second pin of the day to advance to the finals. The win was his second fall over Warner this season after pinning the ranked opponent during their dual meet as well. Gagliano suffered his only loss of the day in the finals, in a tight 4-1 decision.
Luke Balina (Long Branch, NJ / Long Branch) won twice in the championship bracket at 157 pounds before suffering a setback in the quarterfinals. Balina fought back and won his first match in the consolation bracket for a top eight finish at 3-2, just short of placing as the tournament only placed the top six at each weight class.
Dan Kilroy (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills) also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 174 pound weight bracket, with each of his two wins coming via pin fall. Unfortunately, in his quarterfinal defeat Kilroy suffered an injury and was forced to medically forfeit his consolation bracket match and finished the day 2-2.
Alex Mirabella (Fanwood, NJ / Scotch Plains-Fanwood) was 2-2 on the day, with both of victories coming via pin fall.
The Lions next travel to Fort Wayne, IN to participate in the NCAA Duals January 5-6, 2017.
