Lexington, VA … The College of New Jersey wrestling team put forth a tremendous effort at the 2016 NCAA East Regional Championships hosted by Washington and Lee University on Saturday and Sunday.

The Lions will send four wrestlers to the NCAA Division III National Championships as senior
Antonio Mancella (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), junior
Nick Herring (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South), junior
Doug Hamann (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial), sophomore
Ryan Budzek (Point Pleasant Boro, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) all placed in the top three at the regional championships to advance to the national tournament held at Cedar Rapids, IA on March 11
th and 12
th.

TCNJ finished second overall in the 18-team championship, tallying 98.0 points. Stevens Institute of Technology took top honors with 137.0 points. Ursinus College, Delaware Valley University, and Ferum College to third, fourth, and fifth with 88, 87.5, and 84.5 points.

Herring was crowned champion of the 165-pound weight class with a perfect 4-0 mark over the weekend. Her edged Benjamin Schweiger of Delaware Valley University 9-8 in the semis to seal his national bid and advance to the finals. He faced Colin Navickas of Stevens in the championship match and posted a workman-like 6-3 victory.

Mancella returns to the national championships after finishing eighth last year to earn All-American honors. He posted a convincing win in the semifinal match to secure his bid with a 15-8 victory over Raymond Jazikoff of New York University. The finals pitted 10
th-ranked Mancella against third-ranked Logan Meister of Ferum College. Meister earned the decision by a score of 7-3.

Budzek punctuated an outstanding sophomore season with a second-place finish at regionals. He defeated Christia Hoogheem of Ursinus 6-2 in the semifinals. In the 141-championship, Alvontae Drummond of McDaniel College registered a 3-0 win over Budzek.

Hamann had a phenomenal tournament. After receiving a first-round bye, he won his next three bouts by a combined score of 41-5. His win over Phil Woods of Stevens propelled him to the championship round against Joshua Sibblies of Centenary College. Sibblies gained the victory by medical forfeit.

At 184, junior
Dan Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Township) had an action-packed day and fell just shy of an automatic bid with a fourth-place finish. He was topped by to fourth-ranked AJ Kowal of Stevens in the semifinal, but bounced back to beat Blake Bruce of Merchant Marine Academy, 5-1. That set up a bout with Ron Tassoni of Washington & Lee in the third-place final. With his home crowd behind him, Tassoni squeaked out a 9-8 win in a fierce battle.

Senior
Steven Schneider (Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge) also placed fourth overall at 149. He earned a tight decision over Nicholas Matthews of New York University and then clipped Nathan Twito of Merchant Marine Academy, 3-1. Schneider was defeated 4-0 in the third-place final by Zach Wilhelm of Stevens.
