TCNJ downs Gettysburg in dramatic finish

Ewing, NJ ... In a thrilling contest, The College of New Jersey women's lacrosse team defeated Gettysburg College 10-9 on a goal by senior Cortney Natalicchio (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) with 1:39 remaining in the first overtime period.

It was a dramatic finish in Lions Stadium as senior Megan Devlin (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) scored with 26 seconds left on the clock in regulation to force overtime. The score remained 9-9 until Natalicchio found space to get off a low shot for the game-winner to set off a wild celebration.

The victory raises the sixth-ranked Lions season record to 5-0. The fifth-ranked Bullets suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 5-1.

TCNJ trailed 9-7 with 5:18 remaining when freshman Erin Harvey (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) netted an unassisted goal. With 3:30 remaining, freshman goaltender Miranda Chrome (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) came up with a huge save on a point-blank shot to keep it a one-goal game.

In the final three minutes of regulation, the Lions put on relentless pressure. Gettysburg goaltender Shannon Keeler did a tremendous job, making five straight saves in the final minutes. TCNJ picked up each ground ball to keep the ball in their offensive third. Devlin was awarded a free position shot and she delivered in the clutch to knot the game at 9-9.

The Lions got on the board early when junior Mia Blackman (Arlington, Va/Field School) tallied just 39 seconds into the match. Gettysburg rattled off three straight goals in a five-minute span to take a lead they would not relinquish until the final minute of regulation.

Down 5-2 late in the opening period, Devlin took a feed from Natalicchio and scored to draw within two. But Gettysburg's Emily Trospa netted a goal with 14 seconds left in the half to give the Bullets a 6-3 lead at the intermission.

After the break, Devlin fired one between the pipes just 13 seconds into the second half. Eight minutes later, Natalicchio rippled the back of the net for the 100th time in her career at TCNJ. She finished with four goals and two assists in the game.

A goal by Bullet midfielder Caroline Jaeger gave Gettysburg and 8-5 lead with 15 minutes to play. But the Lions clawed their way back in the final minutes to set up the dramatic finish.

Devlin finished with three goals and an assist. Sophomore Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) picked up a team-high four ground balls and won five draw controls, while Chrone made a season-high seven saves.

Keeler made 12 stops for Gettysburg.
