Collegeville, Pa. ... The College of New Jersey baseball team won its eighth straight game, defeating Ursinus College, 7-4 on Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) pitched the Lions (11-1) to victory to move to 2-0, while
Matt Curry (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) registered his second save in as many days. He now has four on the season.
TCNJ amassed 15 hits in the game, but left 13 on base. A three-run sixth was the difference as the Bears dropped to 11-5 with the loss. Lions' senior
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills), junior
Ben Varone (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) and
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each had three hits in the win.
As they have done so many times this season, TCNJ got on the board early. They pushed across two runs in the second, started by a
Zachary Shindler (Mantagh, NY/Managh) double to right-center. Varone drove him home with a single to right and Rizzi plated
CJ Gearhart (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) with a base hit up the middle.
The Lions scored single runs in the third and fourth on an RBI-single by
Alex Christian (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) and a run-scoring fielder's choice off the bat of
Patrick Roberts (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough).
The Bears tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 4-3 game, but some shaky infield defense aided three runs in the sixth for TCNJ. Sophomore
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) delivered an RBI-single in the inning, and when the dust settled, the Lions had a 7-3 lead.
Zachary struck out six in six innings in his second start of the season. Senior left-hander
Joe DiLorenzo (West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) pitched two strong innings of relief, surrendering one run, while striking out three. Curry entered in the ninth and hit the first batter he faced. But he settled in to retire the next three batters to earn his fourth save of the year.
TCNJ will enjoy a day off from competition before heading to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin and Marshall in a double header on Saturday.
