th nationally in the most recent D3baseball.com poll. The Pride dropped to 11-7 with the loss.
Â
TCNJ has been a threat up and down its lineup this spring, and against Widener, it was sophomore
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and junior
Alex Christian (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) doing the Lions' share of damage on offense. Anderson homered, tripled, singled, and drove in six runs, while Christian homered, doubled, and singled to drive in five.
Â
Sophomore
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was sharp on the mound and moved to 3-0 on the season. He limited the Pride to two runs on five hits and struck out four. Sophomore
Chris Barcas (Wall, NJ/Wall) pitched the final of scoreless relief and struck out a pair of batters.
Â
Widener took an early lead in the second inning. A pair of leadoff singles from
Bob Barnett and
Nicholas Enos set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Stephen DeBellis to give the Pride a 1-0 edge.
Â
After being held scoreless the first two innings, the Lions' offense heated up in the third. After sophomore
Ryan Fearon (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) and senior
John Rizzi (Long Hill, NJ/Watchung Hills) drew walks, Anderson drilled a pitch to right-center that beat the center fielder. He pulled up with a two-run triple to give TCNJ a one-run lead.
Â
In the fourth, a pair of long balls highlighted a five-run inning. Christian smoked a line drive to left that cleared the fence for a two-run homer. Later in the inning, Anderson walked up to the plate with two runners on and one out. He connected for a towering three-run home run to left-center for his fourth and fifth runs batted in of the game.
In the seventh, Christian ripped a double off the center field fence to score
Zach Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), who had singled. Freshman
Erik Rano (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) dropped in a base to right to score Christian and the lead grew to 9-2.
Â
Four more runs in the eighth made it a 13-2 score. Christian and Anderson both lined run-scoring singles to cap career-best performances for both players.
Â
Pride shortstop
Nicholas Enos finished with three hits in the game, while
Stephen DeBellis went 2-for-3. Shinder and Rano had two hits apiece for TCNJ.
Â
The Lions will host Haverford College on Thursday in George Ackerman Park at 3:30 p.m.
