Ewing, N.J. … The eighth ranked College of New Jersey field hockey team traveled to third ranked Messiah College this afternoon and was handed a 4-2 defeat despite a late rally attempt.  The Lions now hold a 3-2 overall record.
Messiah took an early 2-0 lead within the first fifteen minutes of the game as Carissa Gehman tallied both goals.Â
Although TCNJ upped their offensive pressure in the second half, Messiah found the back of the net twice more on goals from Moriah Pfautz and Lindsay Bower to take a 4-0 lead.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Lions got on the board with a goal from senior
Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Township).
Caroline Quinn (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) pushed the ball in on a corner and Smith was waiting at the top of the circle to fire a hard shot to the right post.
Smith netted her second goal of the game with just under two minutes remaining on the same corner situation as her first tally. Quinn earned her second assist of the game on the play.
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) got the start in net and made a total of five saves throughout the contest.
The Lions are back in action on Tuesday, September 20th when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy University. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start.
