Gwynedd Valley, P.A. … The College of New Jersey field hockey team traveled to Gwynedd-Mercy University on Tuesday night and surged to a 5-0 victory. The #9 Lions improved to 4-2 overall this season with the win.
Freshman
Cayla Andrews (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) enjoyed a night to remember against the Griffins. She recorded a hat trick in just the fifth game of her collegiate career to lead the Lions' offense.
TCNJ took the early lead when
Andrews netted her first goal of the game (and second of the season) just under ten minutes into the match. Andrews made it a two-goal lead just nine minutes later on a redirect from
Danielle Andreula (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt).
With time winding down in the first half,
Jackie Schwartz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) put the Lions up 3-0 with some help from
Lexi Smith (Florence, NJ/Florence Township) on a corner.
Following the intermission, TCNJ extended its lead by adding two more goals.
Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) picked up her third goal of 2016 on a scramble in front of the net. Andrews completed her hat trick when she found the back of the net for the third time off of a corner. Andreula assisted on the play.
Kelly Schlupp (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) started in net for TCNJ and made a total of two saves to earn the victory.
Christina Fabiano (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) played the second half to complete the combined shutout.
The Lions are back in action on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to fifth ranked Salisbury University. The game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
