Lions Win Home Opener Against Stockton, Stretch Win Streak to Four

Ewing, NJ...   The College of New Jersey men's basketball team (4-1, 2-0 NJAC)  came out victorious in the home opener Wednesday night in a conference match-up over Stockton University (4-3, 0-2 NJAC) by a final score of 95-84. Niall Carpenter (Westampton, NJ/Westampton) and Eric Murdock, Jr. (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater) each scored 23 points to lead the way.

The Ospreys jumped out to an 20-12 lead in the first six minutes of the opening period, however the Lions countered with an 11-4 run to shrink the Osprey edge to just one point. The two teams traded baskets in the opening period and were evenly matched, as the Osprey lead was no more than seven points in the final eight minutes of the half. Carpenter converted from in close with 17 seconds left, then on the next possesion grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the put back to beat the buzzer and tie the game up at 48-48 heading into intermission.

With over 17 minutes remaining, the Lions were on top 56-54, however an 8-1 stretch capped off by a Murdock Jr. three pointer put TCNJ up 64-55. The Ospreys net the next seven points to pull within two, yet the Lions began to pull away with another run. Ryan Jensen (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) knocked down a three pointer to put the Lions up 74-64, and Randall Walko (Somerville, NJ/Somerville) hit one of two free throws to cap off the Lions 12-2 run. The Lions continued to steadily build the lead, and Jensen hit another three pointer to give the Lions a comfortable 18 point advantage with over six minutes remaining.

The trifecta of Carpenter, Murdock Jr., and Walko were the three headed monster for the Lions offense. Carpenter shot 8-14 and 2-5 from beyond the arc, while Murdock Jr. went 7-14 from the field including 3-6 from three point range. Murdock Jr. also kept his teammates involved with five assists. Walko scored 21 points on an efficient 6-8 shooting including 4-5 from the three point line, and also cleaned up on the glass with seven rebounds.

The Lions were on fire from three point range, as they went 14-27 for an efficient 52%. On the defensive end, they forced 13 Osprey turnovers which transitioned into 18 Lion points. The Lions also displayed unselfish basketball as they assisted on 18 of their 29 shots.

With the victory, the Lions have now won four games in a row. Next up, they will travel to Kean University on December 2nd for another conference test that will tip off at 1:00pm.
