Rocky Mount, VA… The College of New Jersey wrestling team earned a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division III East Regional. The team scored 56.5 points and three Lions punched their tickets to LaCrosse, WI to compete in the NCAA Division III National Championships. Ferrum College earned the top spot at the regional scoring 135.5 points.
Nick Herring (Middletown, NJ / Middletown South),
Dan Kilroy (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills), and
Doug Hamann (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) all won their semi-final match-ups and earned second place finishes. The top three in each weight class in the six regionals advance to the National Chamipionships.
Herring earned a 6-1 decision over Howard Kilpatrick of King's College (PA) to advance to the final. ?Hamann advanced to the final by defeating previously unbeaten Patrick Rooney of the United States Merchant Marine Academy 8-6.
Kilroy advanced to the final with a 4-1 decision victory against seventh ranked John Messinger of New York University, before dropping a 5-1 decision to fifth ranked Benjamin Schwieger of Delaware Valley University.
JT Beirne (Fanwood, NJ / Scotch Plains Fanwood) won via technical fall in his first match of the day, before dropping a 3-2 decision to eventual third place finisher Christop
Muce from Centenary University (NJ). Beirne finished in sixth place.
The three Lions that advanced will travel to LaCrosse, WI on March 10-11 where the top eight finishers in each 18-man field will earn All-American honors. Hamann earned an eighth place finish at 174-pounds last year to continue TCNJ's 46-year streak with at least one wrestler earning All-American status.
