Fredericksburg, Va. ... In a match that was might tighter than the final score indicates, the University of Mary Washington registered an 8-1 victory over The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.
The 16th-ranked Eagles improved to 13-4 with the win, while the Lions dropped to 7-3 this spring.
UMW won five out of six singles matches, but they did not come easily. In the top singles match,
Mitchel Sanders (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) went toe-to-toe with Matt Miles, but Miles came away with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) straight set win.
Jack August (Medford, NJ) has been the hottest player for the Lions at second singles, entering the weekend winning 10 straight matches (singles and doubles). He came out and won the opening set 7-6 (7-4). But Patrick Hughes countered with a 7-5 triumph in the second set, and wrestled the match from August with a 7-6 (10-7) win in the tie-breaker.
Sophomore
Omar Bokhari (Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsippany) was the lone TCNJ player to post a victory. He defeated Michael Fleming 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at third singles.
Tim Gavornik (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) also lost a tight match 6-4. 7-5 at fifth singles.
The Lions are back in action this Wednesday when they host Lafayette College at 3:30 p.m.
