Lions extend winning streak to five

Salisbury, MD… The College of New Jersey lacrosse team extended their winning streak to five games with a hard fought 6-3 victory over Salisbury University Saturday afternoon. The top ranked Lions improved to 9-1 on the season, while the 11th-ranked Seagulls dropped to 11-5.

The teams got off to a slow start offensively with neither team able to find the back of the net through the game's first 21 minutes. Freshman Allie Gorman (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Twp.) opened the scoring off a feed from sophomore Erin Harvey (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape).  Gorman then added a free position goal to increase the Lions lead to two. Gabbi Nieves scored her 19th of the season for the Seagulls to cut the TCNJ advantage to 2-1 heading into the half.

The offenses got to work early in the second half with Salisbury tying the game just 55 seconds into the period. Senior Mia Blackman (Arlington, VA / Field School) took over at that point scoring back-to-back goals. Following a Seagull score, Blackman assisted on a goal from Alexandria Fitzpatrick (Burlington, NJ / Northern Burlington) Fitzpatrick added another goal in the final minute to produce the final score.

The game featured the top two teams in the country entering the game in offensive turnovers with the two teams only giving up possession just over 10 times per game each. The Lions forced the Seagulls in 16 turnovers, while TCNJ gave up possession 15 times.

Junior Jaclyn Douglas (Malvern, PA / Great Valley) led the squad with three cause turnovers and senior LeeAnn Bak (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) paced the team with three ground balls.

The Lions out-shot the Seagulls 15-10 and put ten more shots on goal than Salisbury (14-4).

TCNJ remains on the road as they travel to Rowan University on Tuesday, April 18 at 7:00 pm for a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
