West Windsor, NJ ... The College of New Jersey men's tennis team posted a convincing 7-2 decision over Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon at Mercer County Park.
The Lions swept the doubles matches and took four of six singles pairings to secure the win. Senior
Mike Stanley (Newtown, NJ/Council Rock North) and sophomore
Mitchel Sanders (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and
Tim Gavornik (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) each registered multiple wins on the day. Stanley battled Bomber Sam McGrath to a three-set win. He lost the opener 7-5, but came back to take the second set, 6-2. The final set was tied at six, and Stanley rallied for a 10-7 win in the tie-breaker and earn the match point.
Sanders also went toe-to-toe with Minos Stavrakas at first singles. The first two sets were determined by tie-breakers with Stavrakas taking the first and Sanders the second. With the team match decided in the third, Sanders worked his to a 10-7 victory. Gavornik and sophomore
Omar Bokhari (Lake Hiawatha, NJ/Parsipanny) coasted to their wins. Bokhari claimed third singles by duplicate 6-1 scores and Gavornik rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
Gavornik and
Chris D'Agostino (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) won their doubles match 8-7 (7-3), while
Matt Puig (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highland) joined Sanders to win 8-4 at first doubles.
The Lions will play on their outdoor home courts against Franklin and Marshall College tomorrow at noon.
