Middlebury, VT …. The College of New Jersey men's tennis captured its opening round match of the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, defeating Cabrini University, 5-0 on Thursday afternoon.

Mike Stanley (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) posted the clincher, downing Nick Scaramuzza in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 to end the match. The Lions (15-3) advance to play Skidmore on Friday morning at 8:30 a.m., while the Cavaliers finish their season at 11-6.

TCNJ swept the doubles competition by a combined score of 24-1. Sophomore
Mitchel Sanders (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) and
Matt Puig (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highland) ran off eight straight wins to win at first doubles. Stanley and classmate
Jack August (Medford, NJ) registered an 8-1 triumph and sophomore
Tim Gavornik (Millington, NJ/Watchung Hills) and junior
Chris D'Agostino (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) blanked their opponent, 8-0.

D'Agostino rolled to a 6-0. 6-0 win to sew up the first singles match to make it 4-0. Stanley then closed out the opening-round win to send the Lions to their match against the Thoroughbreds. Â
