Strong Defensive Effort Helps Lions Top Cougars

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's basketball team (13-4, 8-2 NJAC) defeated Kean University (6-11, 3-8 NJAC) in a conference match-up on Saturday by a final score of 48-34.

The Lions were trailing 10-7 in the second quarter, however got on top with a 13-4 run capped off by a three pointer from Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, NJ/Morris Catholic) with 24 seconds left in the first half.

In the third quarter the Lions were up 24-18, and pushed the lead to as many as 19 by way of an 18-5 stretch. Strong defense was on display as the Lions suffocated the Cougars, and did not allow them to score a point for eight minutes and fourteen seconds during that run. Samantha Famulare (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) hit a three pointer after receiving a nice pass from Nikki Schott (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills) to put the Lions up 45-26 and give them their biggest lead of the game. 

Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Medford) led the Lions with a game high 15 points on 6-12 shooting from the floor. Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) scored 10 points and added four assists. Shannon Devitt (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) continued to be a force on the glass as she ripped down 14 rebounds, and Schott added nine points and eight rebounds. Schum moved into 12th place all time in program history in assists as she now has 227 on her career.

The Lions stingy defense was on display as they held the Cougars to 13-60 (21.7%) shooting from the floor on the game, and they forced 20 turnovers which turned into 13 points on the other end.

With the win the Lions remain undefeated at home, as they are 6-0 in Packer Hall this year. They will return to Packer Hall on Monday, January 22nd to face New Jersey City University at 6pm.
