TCNJ Defeats NJCU to Remain Undefeated at Home

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's basketball team (14-4, 9-2 NJAC) defeated New Jersey City University (0-14, 0-11 NJAC) on Monday night in a conference match-up by a final score of 84-19.

The Lions took control of the game early as they raced out to a 22-6 advantage in the first quarter. Reining NJAC Rookie of the Week Shannon Devitt (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) was active in the opening period, as she grabbed three consecutive rebounds and hit a put back with 20 seconds left to give the Lions the 16 point advantage. They extended the lead in the second quarter with a 14-4 stretch capped off by two free throws from Jen Byrne (Medford, NJ/Medford) with just over a minute left to play in the half. In the second half the Lions controlled the game and held onto the victory.

Byrne led the Lions with a game high 19 points on an efficient 8-14 shooting, and also grabbed five rebounds. Devitt ripped down 17 rebounds and added 11 points for her seventh double-double of the season. Nicole Shatsky (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) added 15 points on an efficient 6-8 shooting from the field, and chipped in seven assists to go with five rebounds. Christine Woods (River Edge, NJ/River Dell) added nine points and nine rebounds coming off of the bench.

The Lions defense stifled the Gothic Knights, as they held them to 11.8% shooting from the floor and forced 25 turnovers. The 19 points was the fewest known allowed points in program history, the prior known record was 20 points against Arcadia University the 2008-09 season.

With the win the Lions remain undefeated at home as they are now 8-0 in Packer Hall this season, and the Lions currently sit at second place in the NJAC standings.

Next up for the Lions is another conference match-up, this time at Stockton University this Wednesday, January 24th at 6pm.
