EWING, N.J. – The College of New Jersey field hockey team raced to a 5-0 halftime lead before cruising to an 8-0 win Tuesday night over Cabrini University. The fifth-ranked Lions improved to 12-3 on the season, while the Cavaliers dropped to 3-11.
Â
The Lions jumped out to an early lead just 1:19 into the game when
Tori Tiefenthaler pushed a ball across the goal mouth and
Tori Hannah found the back of the cage for her seventh of the season. Tiefenthaler then extended the advantage freeing a ball that was amongst the goalies pads and firing into the vacated net.
Â
Hannah would take over the remainder of the opening frame. First she made a stick to stick pas from the corner to right in front of the cage, setting up
Cayla Andrews for the goal. Next she dribbled into the scoring arc and chipped a shot over the Cavalier netminder for her second of the game. She closed out the half by completing her hat trick on a backhand shot off a feed from
Christina Cammarata. The assist is the first collegiate point for Cammarata.
Â
Hannah picked up right where she left off to open the second half. She stole a Cabrini clearing attempt and fired toward the cage with
Iris Schuck deflecting the shot into the net. Andrews scored her second of the game off a rebound before Tiefenthaler closed out the scoring by deflecting a
Sidney Padilla drive from a penalty corner.
Â
The Lions out-shot the Cavaliers 31-2 and held a 12-0 penalty corner advantage.
Â
Maddie Beaumont made a pair of saves before giving way to
Dani Britton as the pair combined for the team's eight shutout this year.
Â
The Lions close out the regular season Saturday, when they host Stockton University at 7:00 p.m. The game will be part of TCNJ's Homecoming Weekend and before the game the team will honor its two graduating members.
