Game Recap: Baseball |

Lions Slug Way to Sweep Over Pioneers

Auburndale, FL… The College of New Jersey baseball team picked up two wins over Utica College in a doubleheader on Tuesday. They took game one by a final score of 15-1, and game two by a final tally of 16-2.

In the first game, the Lions jumped on the board right away with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) drove in a run with a groundout, then Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) laced an RBI single to center.

The Lions then added three more in the top of the second. Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) drove one in with an RBI sacrifice fly, then Shindler worked a bases loaded walk. Lindsay drove in another to make it 5-0 Lions. Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) provided the offense in the top of the fourth with a three RBI base clearing double to push the lead to 8-1. The Lions continued to produce runs, as they tallied 16 hits on the game.

In his first game with the Lions, starter Andrew Rowan (Marlton. NJ/Cherokee) was effective on the mound. He threw the complete seven innings with no earned runs, four strikeouts, and only four hits allowed to earn the victory.

In game two, the Lions reclaimed the lead right away after falling behind 1-0. Lindsay remained hot, as he knocked in two with a double to deep left field. Thomas Persichetti (Hamilton, NJ/Notre Dame) ripped a double into deep left that scored two, then Lindsay continued to be a run producing machine as he ripped a two run home run to left field to extend the lead to 7-1. In the bottom of the third, Shindler drove in three runs with a hustle inside the park home run. The Lions were able to control the remainder of the game to hold onto the victory.

Making his collegiate debut was Tim Schumacher (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) who allowed only one earned run on five hits while striking out four. Nickolas Kleftogiannis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) came out of the pen in his first appearance of the season and threw two shutout innings while only allowing one hit.

The victory in game one marked the 250th of Head Coach Dean Glus' career.

The Lions are off tomorrow, and will resume play on March 15th against University of Southern Maine at 2:30 pm.
