Auburndale, FL... In the final game of the Florida trip, The College of New Jersey baseball team defeated Knox College in eight innings by a final score of 12-2. The Lions jump to 8-2 on the year, while the Prairie Fire drop to 2-6, and TCNJ ends the Florida trip with a 7-2 record including winning the last seven games.
The Lions continued their trend of scoring early, as they got ahead in the top of the first inning when leadoff man
Danny Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro South) scored on an overthrow after he reached third base. Borup continued to remain hot, as he ripped a double to left field in the top of the second that drove in two and put the Lions up 3-1.
Tommy McCarthy (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) knocked in a run with an RBI groundout, and
Mike Follet (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) drove in the fifth run with a base hit. That hit marked the 100th of Follet's career.
In the top of the fifth, Follet continued to swing the bat well as he ripped an RBI double to right center that put the Lions up 8-1.
Matt Giacose (Wycoff, NJ/Ramapo) made it a 9-1 game with an RBI sacrifice fly.Â
On the mound for the Lions was
Brandon Zachary (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) who was phenomenal. He earned the win and went the complete eight innings while allowed two earned runs on four hits. He also tallied an impressive 13 strikeouts while only walking two batters.Â
Follet was a homer shy of the cycle, as he went 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Borup capped off his successful trip as he went 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Zachary Shindler (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) went 2-4 with an RBI double and two runs scored, while
Patrick Anderson (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) collected three hits and scored two runs.
Austin Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) went 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.Â
The Lions will now trek back to Ewing, and they will resume action on March 21st when they will travel to Alvernia University for a 3:30 pm start.
